Statement from Auditor of State Dave Yost

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Columbus – The following statement can be attributed to Auditor of State Dave Yost in response to Gov. Kasich’s signing today of H.B. 326, which creates a misdemeanor penalty for violations of existing law prohibiting the use of public funds to support or oppose a levy or bond issue.

“Public funds are for the public, not politicians,” Auditor Yost said. “This law makes clear that Ohio cares about that distinction, and any public official who ignores it can explain it to the judge.”

The Auditor of State’s office, one of five independently elected statewide offices in Ohio, is responsible for auditing more than 5,600 state and local government agencies.  Under the direction of Auditor Dave Yost, the office also provides financial services to local governments, investigates and prevents fraud in public agencies and promotes transparency in government.
