Columbus – A lack of supporting documentation led auditors to identify an overpayment of more than $155,000, according to an audit released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

“Maintaining the required documentation is a simple task,” Auditor Yost said. “If it isn’t done, we can’t prove that services were actually provided.” 

The audit reviewed 180 paid services to former personal care aide Mark Johnson for compliance with Ohio’s Medicaid reimbursement rules during the period of January 1, 2009 through June 30, 2011. Johnson was only able to submit documentation from the period of December 31, 2007 through January 4, 2009, supporting just two services in the audit sample. Due to the lack of documentation, 178 errors were identified. 

Auditors identified that Johnson was overpaid by $144,388. With interest in the amount of $10,992.28, the total amount owed to Ohio Medicaid is $155,380.28.
